Description: Photograph of Columbus, Ohio, native John Rumora in May 1945 after his graduation from boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. John George Rumora (1927-) enlisted in the United States Navy on February 24, 1945. He processed through boot camp at Great Lakes and then was assigned to the engine room of the U.S.S. Santa Fe, a CL-60 light cruise which served in the Pacific Theater. Rumora was aboard the U.S.S. Santa Fe when World War II ended, and the crew participated in the occupation of Japan, during which the ship stopped and saw the devastation at Nagasaki in October 1945. After the ship sailed home, Rumora helped prepare the U.S.S. Santa Fe for the mothball fleet in Bremerton, Washington. He was honorably discharged as a Machinist Mate 3/c on July 19, 1946. Description: Photograph of Beryl Drummond at Great Lakes Training Station Boot Camp, 1941. Born June 16, 1918, Beryl Esco Drummond was a member of the "Waterloo Wonders" high school basketball team, of Waterloo, Ohio. They were the second Ohio high school basketball team in Class B to win consecutive state championships, in 1934 and 1935. After high school, Drummond continued to play semi-professional basketball with teams such as the Whiskered Wizards and the Acme Aviators (sponsored by the Acme Pattern & Toll Company of Dayton, Ohio). He played his last basketball game in the winter of 1952, after a disappointing game at the Knights of Columbus gym in Columbus, Ohio. He later worked as assistant superintendent at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Brecksville, Ohio and at the Green Acres Country Club in Florida. He died April 26, 1982. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This image is a reproduction of a military map created by cartographer John Melish and included in his "Military and Topographical Atlas of the United States Including the British Possessions and Florida" (published in 1813 and 1815). The visual components of Melish's atlas depict areas affected by the War of 1812, and the text vividly describes their geography. "Map of the Seat of War in North America" accompanies the atlas' first chapter, "Description of the Seat of War in North America." The map includes four of the Great Lakes in their entirety (only the tip of Lake Superior is represented); the St. Lawrence River and the Gulf of St. Lawrence; the Atlantic Ocean to the edge of Newfoundland and the tip of Delaware; "Upper" and "Lower Canada;" all or part of fifteen states (including Ohio); Michigan Territory; and the eastern edges of Illinois Territory and Indiana Territory. The map shows the mileage between cities, towns, and settlements. It also includes a table of population. Its dimensions are 21.5 x 15.5 inches. John Melish (1771-1822) was born in Scotland and apprenticed to a cotton maker. His job brought him to America at various times, and he settled permanently in Philadelphia in 1811. He wrote extensively of his travels in America during the early 19th century and became one of his adopted country's best cartographers during this period. This photograph shows a Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. boat hauling cargo long the Cuyahoga River. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company is an American company providing construction services in dredging and land reclamation, currently the largest such provider in the United States. GLD&D operates primarily in the United States but conducts one-quarter of its business overseas. It is currently based in Oak Brook, Illinois. The company was founded in 1890 as the partnership of William A. Lydon & Fred C. Drews and was named Lydon & Drews dredging company. Early projects included the shoreline structures for the Chicago's Columbian Exposition. The company soon had satellite operations throughout the Great Lakes. It was renamed the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLD&D) in 1905. Between 1900 and 1950, GLD&D undertook major projects such as the Sabin Lock, straightening of the Chicago River west of the Chicago Loop, the Michigan Avenue Bridge, foundation landfill and reclamation of the area where the Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum, Soldier Field, Meigs Field and Field Museum of Natural History stand today in Chicago and harbor work for the Naval Station Great Lakes.
